Suits, suits, suits

Anyone in Cambridge (or elsewhere, if you want to pay to ship them) with a 38 shoulder measurement who needs some suits/sport coats? They're 1-4 years out of style, which is why I'm getting rid of them, but I hesitate to give this much clothing to good will. All in good condition, most by DKNY, Boss or similar.

Send me an email if interested, otherwise I'll donate them over the weekend.

Dawkins says:

"I suppose that, in the ditzily unreal intersection of theology and feminism, existence might indeed be a less salient attribute than gender."

Hope all are having a Merry Christmas (or other appropriate holiday), best wishes for a happy new year.

EDIT: The strange combination of holiday wishes and quotes from The God Delusion was coincidental, not an attempt to be snarky. I actually just got the book for Christmas and have been reading it, and this post seemed a good opportunity to wish happy thoughts in the direction of people I know.

Dear world,

The following, though bearing no contentful relation to one another, are
facts, the combination of which gives a faurly accurate description of
just how eventful the last few months have been.

It's worth noting, before we embark on such a list, that all is
essentially well, and that I am as content as one can ever be while
still making time for reasonably excessive worrying.

1. I'm working in Manhattan, but strongly miss Boston. I think, for now,
I'm sold on the whole Boston thing. Manhattan in a few years when I'm
wealthy. Some time in may, I'd say, I became really attached to
Cambridge. When I go back there, now, it feels comfortable and nice.

2. I was walking down the street yesterday, and saw a man with a
messenger bag that I knew to cost ~$500. I then looked at his shoes, and
knew them to be Prada. I then realized that I've become one of those
people snobby enough to know such things.

3. I've decided definitively to go to law school; this summer has been
of mixed enjoyment, but I really like lawyers, I've found, and I think
corporate work will be fun.

4. I now, in fact, own a pink Ralph Lauren polo shirt. I think this
represents me selling out to the man in just about the only way I hadn't
already.

5. My uniform has definitely changed; I never thought it'd happen, but
jeans are probably now my default. I finally found some slim enough to
flatter me, and off I went. I love the Italians. I suppose a constant
from before is the preference for a jacket, but even then, I tend to
wear them over t-shirts rather than dress shirts.

6. I think something like Moore's Law governs my clothing selection.

7. I intend to regularly go dancing with Claire this fall.

8. Due to an unfortunate rock climbing accident, my right thumb is no
longer particularly opposable. The official word is that such things
don't really get better without surgery; I'm skeptical.

9. Claire can cook! Visits to Boston this summer have had the added
benefit of being incredibly tasty.

10. If I ever need to dress up as a pirate, I now own a dress shirt with
ruffles that are ideal for just such an endeavor. Again, I offer warm
fuzzy feelings to the Europeans, for making my present wardrobe
possible.

11. Going to work every day, and being on an early schedule, is actually
really nice. In, oh, 4 years, when I have a real career, it'll be
lovely.

12. Studying for the LSAT, shockingly, is not super-fun.

13. Living at home has been stressful, but finally got nice around the
beginning of july or thereabouts.

14. It's very odd not to be getting any HRSFA-related emails.

A line from Take the Lead, which I saw today; uttered by a beginner as she watched an advanced dancer practice.

The trip was wonderful; I'm sorry that this break is over. The entire experience was refreshing, and I'm as relaxed as my very uptight self ever is. Distance from Harvard, and who I've become there, was such a blessing. I feel better; somehow cleaner, like little bits of me were poked, and some of the unwanted bits fell clear. I'm not certain what practical implications this will have; the last time I felt this way was as I got to know people at Harvard.

Regardless... I had a brilliant time; I'm very happy about how seeing Stephanie turned out, and I'm so very glad I chose to go back to England rather than anywhere else. It was lovely just to be on vacation in a place that I love, without needing worry about an itinerary, because I've seen everything there. I just needed to go back to the things that I missed.

Some highlights

*Seeing Ian McKellen in person; I went to a performance of "The Cut" with Stephanie and her class.

*Going to the dance tailor; it was the most archetypically luxurious and picturesque little shop I could have imagined.

*Ballroom dancing in a gazebo in the rain

*Walking onto the Millennium Bridge, in the rain, only to have the sky clear; it was brilliantly bright, and there were just enough drops on the wind that everything sparkled.

*For the first few days in the city, I definitely felt like I was trying to waltz to a foxtrot; my rhythm just wasn't right, and I kept, both metaphorically and literally, bumping into things. But a few days in to the trip, things suddenly just clicked, and it all felt right again.

Panic

It sometimes amazes me how much a slave I am to technology. Harvard's IMAP servers went down today -- for no more than 10 minutes -- and Apple Mail reported this as a deletion of all of my email (clearly there was some other server it could connect to, which just had no data on it). Given that I'm scheduled to back all of my email up, from the FAS server to my RAID, in a mere 12 hours, I was thrown into an utter panic. 12,000 emails -- everything since September -- potentially lost, without any real trace, because I didn't back them up soon enough.

A lot has happened since Septembere; email is something like a diary to me, as there tends to always be at least one person to whom I write regularly and share basically everything -- and for the brief times when there isn't, that tends to be noteworthy as well. I haven't lost more than 20 emails in the last 5 years. The prospect of such a break in the achive just crushed both my OCD bits and my sentimental, nostalgic bits.

Thankfully all is well, and my email is now saved both on my server here and the backup server in NYC. But that was the longest twenty minutes of neurobiology lecture I've ever needed to sit through. I don't think I absorbed a single fact.
